The world went cold a long time ago. One ember remembers the light.

EMBERLOST is a dark, atmospheric 2D side-scroller about carrying that ember across ten chapters of a world that has forgotten fire. No combat, no inventory, no menus to learn. There is a light that fades, a path that does not, and the distance between them.

Ten chapters

IIThe Mist MarshFalse lights drift over black water. Only a true fire breathes.
IIIThe Rain ValleyLightning is a gift here — for one heartbeat, you see everything.
IVThe Forsaken VillageWalk softly. Something still answers the bell.
VThe Dead CityA city turned to stone and ash — and a blind keeper too vast to fight.
VIThe Clock TowerTime stopped waiting. Wake the machine, and make the hour strike.
VIIThe Mine MouthThe road turns to rail. Ride the cart down — duck, jump, and choose your line.
VIIIThe Underground RiverThe world goes out. Only your ember shows the way — and something swims beside the raft.
IXThe Ash SlopeThe storm comes in waves. Walk against it — and never jump into the gust.
XThe Great HearthThe king of shadows cannot be killed. He can only be given to.

Finish a chapter and the next one opens on its own.

How it plays

Your ember is your lamp. The further you carry it the smaller its circle of light becomes, and sparks along the road feed it back. Fall, drown, or let the dark close in and you wake at the last light you passed — the run continues, the count remembers. Every chapter ends with a record: sparks found, time taken, falls survived.

No two chapters ask the same thing. Chapter IV asks for a quieter foot — something in the village listens. Chapter VI hands you a crank, and an hour that has waited a long time to strike. Chapter IX gives you a storm that arrives in waves, and Chapter X a king who cannot be fought, only given to.

  • Progress is kept in your browser where your browser allows it; the game plays start to finish either way.
  • No ads, no tracking, no account. Best in fullscreen, with headphones.

The music

The score follows the ember, not you. Every chapter has two recordings — calm and tense — playing at the same time, in the same key and tempo. As your light fades one gives way to the other. You can hear how much you have left without looking at it. All 36 pieces are in the Season I download.

How this was made

The engine, the level data and the words on this page were written with an AI coding assistant. Every shape you see is drawn by the engine at runtime — no stock art, no sprite sheets, no game framework, no third-party code. The soundtrack is AI-generated instrumental music: 36 pieces written to a composition plan, then mixed live by the engine as your ember rises and fades.
